Predicted Wind Direction

They just keep coming. We caught three nice size Mahi’s today! By the time we get to Dutch Harbor we won’t have any more freezer space, haha. There is a substantial high pressure area a couple days north of us and we may not have much wind for a day or two while sailing through this area. We should exit this high pressure area at around 40 degrees north, about 4 days north of our present position, and this is where the wind typically begins to switch to blowing from the west. However, the weather 4 days out(not sure how accurate that will be)shows the wind to still be out the east in the area of 40+ degrees north. Therefore, we are not initially sailing quite as far west as we might otherwise do.

Speaking of weather, the wind has been generally less than 20 knots for the last day which made for more comfortable sailing. And as Wade learned in the galley today, it is still good to be prepared for the unexpected. So do you think a seasoned sailor like Wade would gimbal the stove during these steady conditions? Well Wade didn’t think it was necessary and an out of blue(sea) came a huge wave that set flying through the air a pan of left over roast beef, potatoes, carrots, cabbage and gravy all over the wall and floor. Would you still eat this pot roast after much of the steaming pile was quickly thrown back in the pan by Wade? Is a 5 seconds rule still applicable at sea?

Over the last 24 hours we are now 155 closer to Dutch Harbor. Woohoo.

Cheers,
Wade and Sara

Math Be Hard For Sailors Tip: Upon arrival we will have to choose between two passes, Akutan or Unalga, that connect the Pacific Ocean and the Bering Sea to reach Dutch Harbor. Traveling in and out of a pass like Akutan or Unalga is similar to how we enter and exit an atoll. We try our best to time our arrival based on the tides and currents. The nice part is we are in the United States and NOAA provides a lot of information (http://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov). Be sure to figure out if we will even be able to enter either pass during slack time and make our destination at the time you guessed. Good luck.
