Our First Fish!

We caught our first fish and we weren’t even fishing. Relaxing and celebrating our Happy Friday we were listening to some sweet new tunes, recommended by Sara’s cousin Anthony, as Sara noticed a mess of birds about 100 yards from the boat. Wade quickly jumped up and released a fishing pole line with a cedar plug lure. Not even two seconds later there was a baby tuna on the line. Wade reeled in the fish and we didn’t even have to take down the sails. Wade thought for a second to throw the line back in to catch more fish but hesitated as the little baby tuna would make a perfect Friday night meal and if we caught anything bigger we’d have to slow down. After the fish was cleaned, Sara took the fish to the galley and crowned poke over white rice. The sauce was nothing special soy, Tony’s seasoning, sweet chili, and chopped fresh onions. The poke marinated in the fridge while we took our showers and then dinner was served over a beautiful sunset.

At noon we had 152 nautical miles to Penrhyn (6.28 S, 158.30 W) and a course of 168 degrees. We are pushing as fast as we can to be anchored in Penrhyn by 6 PM HST, so we are running the engine through the night. Both of us continue to write articles about Fanning Island and will get those posted with pictures and video as soon as possible.
